"But a confrontation is exactly what we intended to create. The entire city needs to be confronted with this history. Some folks need to feel uncomfortable. We cant find a better future without learning from our past. If you havent yet heard, that concrete will soon be torn up and replaced by a park. This is a huge step forward and it doesnt even come close to settling the score.
Thats what I can tell you about our thinking on the November cover. Thats how we tried to attract attention to a story about the White people who were in charge 50 years ago and how they used their institutions to diminish the lives of Black folks who lived near Fair Park and undermine generations of people who would follow.
Teaching this sort of history has gotten difficult lately. Some parents, it seems, would rather that their children never be exposed to uncomfortable truths.
State lawmakers have decided that local school districts cant make their own determinations about the ability of their teachers to convey information. Instead, the state that prides itself on limiting government interference has passed a law that injects the state into every public school in Texas, in a purported effort to protect young peoples feelings (Im summarizing).
I hope folks will take the time to read before they react. I hope they can talk to their kids about what happened 50 years ago and whats going on today. "

(53,876 posts)today. What happened to all those displaced Black people and their descendants? How were they financially affected...negatively I mean?
By quite a bit we can be sure.
No wonder so many in charge at the time, and now, don't want their dirty deeds exposed. Why their children might not feel bad about themselves, they'll feel bad about their parents and grandparents.
It's so pathetic when your history is so evil you go to extreme measures to keep it hidden.

(15,325 posts)That some store/s couldn't face the past as the Magazine stared their customers in the face & chose to not display it at all, gives even more creedence to the editor of the D, in putting it right there, front & center.
Bold step up & much appreciated.
Now THIS is good journalism.
Bravo, D.
This is also echoed in the recent NYC controversy as well.
Where freeways & bridges were placed to draw racial lines on the city map.
Shine that light!
