Finding Fellow Democratic Voters Near You

- Daily Kos, May 17, 2022. - Ed. ((*Pls. read. *Suggestions and other sources are welcome.))
In my area, we have this newsletter called NextDoor.com. It is available to people in nearby districts for miles around your home. ND is nationwide. One day I was lamenting about the lack of Democrats in my really red district. I was reading the usual Rethug bullshit on Nextdoor and decided to see if there were any democrats living nearby.
I posted a new group called Relaxed Dems and Progressives. The name could have been better but I didn't want it to be threatening, (now I do!!)
We have over 450 active members on our own group list. We have meetings at local breweries, picnics in the summer at the lake, an active mailing list, and last but not least work on getting out the vote. We send out reminders to vote in the primaries. Many of the people are district chairs and on boards of their local precinct. 450 people can provide many good ideas and imput.
My good friend was all worried at our first gathering that people would need a questionnaire/icebreaker list to get people talking. No one needed anything like that in spite of the careful questions we had composed and the pens we brought. The level of compatibility between us all was lovely and no one quit talking the entire time.
We Democrats and Progressives are not alone and just a few hundred here and there can change an election. Usually, the first thing new members say is, I thought I was alone...
We look up voting records of people wanting to join and screen people to prevent non-Democrats from participating in the group.

- That sounds great, CR. Good for you, doing that! I would like to try that, but not sure I wouldnt be inviting harassment and possibly vandalism at our home, where we live. When I push back on the occasional Repub RW post, I do get some likes, but so far, no opposition. Hmmm. I post facts, which pretty much nullifies the GQP disinformation being posted. I havent been kicked off our ND feed yet. I dont post anytning provocative, like FG sux. 😏 Although they make snide comments about the Biden admin, unprovoked.

- I wish I could find other Democratic voters in our area. There are so few, apparently, that there were no Dem candidates on the ballot for the election this month. 😕😳 Im pretty new here, so Im not really integrated into the culture here. (Expat blue Californian.)
I will keep in mind what youve suggested. Good for you for leading the charge on that for your ND

- We did have some trolls in my group but I banished them. I'm not very well liked among the right wingers on Nextdoor but so far, they haven't retaliated except to insult me online. You do take s chance but so far, it's been okay. I'm glad people are trying to organize online.

- Im sure Ive been marked as the librul in our area on ND. But so far, no one has responded with any negative commentary. I really am reluctant to approach any pro-choice issues. I dont speak on issues unless spoken to. We actually need our neighbors, living in our rural area. 😕 (Theyre all MAGAs, but thell do ennythang for ya.)
Good for you for having the courage to speak up on your ND group.
I have my own group in Mesquite NV. The group is called Progressives Corner. We have about 105 members. I'm glad I have it but sad Nextdoor has changed their layout so now it's harder to get to my group. One of these days I'll figure out how to get people to the group, and tell newcomers about it.

- Here is a suggested post for Progressive Nextdoor groups: "The Political Revolution is compiling Progressive endorsed candidates (by Our Rev, Brand New Congress, Dem Socialists, Progressive Change Campaign) running for office in 2022 by state, and has input at their website to date primaries through June. If you want to vote Progressive in the primaries , go to this website: https://political-revolution.com/campaigns/ "
I'm afraid ND hasn't got much going on but you can at least help the candidates running to be elected, and this will perhaps encourage others to run in the future.
