BIG SKY, Montana, July 21 (Reuters) - Liberal Justice Elena Kagan said on Thursday that it would be a "dangerous thing for a democracy" if the conservative-majority U.S. Supreme Court loses the confidence of the American public.

Speaking in public for the first time since the court's momentous ruling last month that overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide, Kagan stressed the importance of the justices staying in their proper roles as judges and not dictating public policy. read more

"I'm not talking about any particular decision or even any particular series of decisions, but if over time the court loses all connection with the public and with public sentiment, that's a dangerous thing for a democracy," Kagan said at a judicial conference in Montana.

The court, America's top judicial body, has a 6-3 conservative majority that has boldly asserted its power in the abortion ruling and other recent cases. read more .......................

So wake the fuck up and start using the past tense when talking about this shit, instead of treating it like a hypothetical future which might possibly be avoided. It can't be avoided because it wasn't avoided. We're already there.

We don't need a plan for how to avoid it. We need a plan for how to get out of it. Those are two different ailments with very different treatments. Deal with the problem which actually exists, not the problem you wished existed.

Left the station. & a whole generation of millennials and Zs probably aren't keen on second chances.

We're all mad, but I got to live thru progress gains in rights. They just keep getting slammed with recession (2008), 4 years of rump, Covid pandemic and recession, wage stagnation before inflation, inflation, housing bubble, and loss of rights. It's the latest insult, and they know more are coming from this court.

when some of the brighter lights in the Democratic Party were pleading for people to get out and vote to keep TFG out of the White House because they were concerned about any and all nominations he might make to the SCOTUS. Unfortunately, they were right and it looks like TFG is willing to do it again in 2024 just to avoid the legal shitstorm that seems to gathering around his head. Worse yet, DeSantis is nipping at his heels because he can con the same people into voting for him. I'd rather be wrong about all this.
