A former Sunday school teacher from Johnston County was sentenced Monday to a minimum of 87 years in prison.
A jury found Jonathan Young, 38, of Benson, guilty on multiple counts of rape, sexual offense and indecent liberties with children.
According to the district attorney's office, the crimes involved three children, and most took place at Firstborn Baptist Church in Benson. The incidents occurred between 2003 and 2014, and the youngest victim was 7 years old when she was molested, investigators said.
At Young's trial, the jury heard testimony from two additional witnesses who were sexually abused as young children.
Girls who grew up at the church alleged years of sexual abuse by Young, misconduct that some former church members say church leaders knew about but did nothing to stop.
Church leaders told WRAL News in 2018 there was no coverup.

My pet bugaboo is identifying a location as "Springfield".

(9,994 posts)Exactly what he was dispensing. Little girls, some too young to probably even have the right words to tell their parents. They need to turn him over to the girls' daddies before he goes to prison! I don't think he'll have a very nice time in there, though---Chester the Molester usually doesn't.

(1,639 posts)There is "General Population" and solitary confinement and then an area where prisoners who would be in immediate danger are usually sent.
And I hope the victims and/or their families sue the pews out of that church. That is the only thing such institutions understand. Absolutely nothing seems to phase them until it impacts their bottom line. If they cared about decency they wouldn't teach the story of Abraham almost slicing his son, Issac's, throat to young children in Sunday School.

Pastor Durwood is currently unavailable to comment of his great nephew's life sentence.
