"...But even before his scheduled swearing-in on Jan. 3, Santos has already spawned new proposed legislation in Congress. Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) said he will introduce legislation requiring that when candidates for federal office provide details of their education, employment and military history, they do so under oath. Torres calls the bill the Stop Another Non-Truthful Office Seeker (SANTOS) Act...."
And from the Twitter account of Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY):
"BIG NEWS: I am introducing a bill to require candidates to disclose under oath their employment, educational, & military history so we can punish candidates who lie to voters about their qualifications.
It will be called the Stop Another Non-Truthful Office Seeker (SANTOS) ACT."

(836 posts)I think this bill should not only apply to federal office candidates, but to anyone who applies to be a candidate in any elected race - local or state or federal.
It should be part of the registration form required to be filled out by a candidate announcing the candidate is running for office.
We really need this.

(836 posts)In addition, I think Congress should repeat the 1974 FERPA (Family Education Rights and Privacy Act) for federal candidates, so that: any journalist and any voter can request and obtain an academic transcript from any college for a candidate for federal office.
I don't care if the grades are redacted for each course. I just want to see the transcript.
As you may recall, Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen (now in jail) said in sworn testimony Trump was livid about any questions pertaining to his educational record.

(836 posts)We have a federal law called the "Stolen Valor Act" - and I think we also need a federal law called the "Stolen Scholar Act," making it a crime to claim a college degree when you have none, just as it is now a federal crime to claim a medal when you have none to obtain a benefit.
The exact same wording can be used - just replace "medal" with "college degree."
