What Can the House Do to Address Santos' Falsehoods?

On the campaign trail, Rep.-elect George Santos, a Republican who ultimately flipped a Democratic seat in New York, misled voters about his work and educational history, his family’s heritage, his past philanthropic efforts and his business dealings.

His litany of fabrications has raised questions as to whether Santos, who was elected last month to represent parts of northern Long Island and northeast Queens, will be allowed to take his seat next week when Congress convenes or thrown out once he is sworn in.

But House Republican leaders, who have so far remained silent amid the persistent questions about Santos, are unlikely to punish him in any significant way. Even if they could force him out of Congress, it would prompt a special election in a swing seat, setting up a potential blow to the party’s already precarious majority.

And Santos has pledged to vote for Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, the Republican leader, for speaker next week as McCarthy faces a rebellion on the right and needs every vote he can get.

I always knew that extremism was too dysfunctional to allow integrity and recognized its severe dependence on self deception and deceits of others.

I didn't realize before seeing it happen, though, how spread and "normalization" of extremism itself poisoned national integrity and the even the basic self honesty needed for self protection. A more dangerous infectious disease by far than Covid, which couldn't have killed over a million Americans without it.

The Putin GOP creates hatred, division, chaos across the country for the purpose of gaining
permanent power and access to US financial assets.

Right out of the KGB handbook.

Yes quite a shock to see the American people vote to end democracy
and reject science and education. To the point their lives are in danger.

I think there are going to be a number of PhD dissertations on the topic down the road.

an extravagance of new questions leading to leaps in knowledge. I envy those who could see the horrific forced awarenesses we went through, though, as mostly great opportunities to advance understanding.

At least we now have confirmation of the existence and anti-democratic potentials of left wing authoritarianism. In 2016 we could observe it in action, threatening the sovereignty of voters in our own party, and wonder in shock at what we saw, but googling brought no answers. Scientists were also observing, though, and thank goodness. The attacks alone caused the Democratic Party to tighten up some party rules, etc, but with new knowledge we'll hopefully be better able to prepare for additional challenges in future.

Nationally too of course. It's unlikely for the foreseeable future that the GOP will be able to join in substantive action to limit the dangers of authoritarianism since it's such a big driver on the right. This'll still be above all our battle. As always.

We had a break after WWII. The world wanted peace.
Soldiers who made it home just wanted to have families and live quiet lives.

But the world once again is lining up: autocratic regimes against democracies.
The autocracies will use any means possible in their quest for power.
The want power, wealth, resources, land. And they will fight hard for it.

But highly entertaining.

Security clearance???

Will "who is George Santos" pass..??? TRUSTWORTHYNESS ..

Through the process of election and selection to a seat in the House of Representatives or Senate comes with it a certain public seal of access to information of a sensitive nature. (Few voters likely think about this when they vote, but it’s a key reason trustworthiness often plays a major role in politicking). Both the House and Senate do have security offices and staff – with the responsibility for overseeing access to classified information, among other things.

No buyer's remorse. Their next chance to get rid of him comes in two years.

But by then he may have developed sufficient support among other constituents and big money backers to overcome any anger or remorse that might remain. Voters are notoriously fickle and foolable after all, especially HIS types of voters, and money can buy him a shiny new image.

Wonder what persona they might choose? REBORN pathological liar, of course, but reborn as what? In two years he could restyled as "Progressive" like Sinema or as a young male MT Greene; may sound like a stretch, but both constituencies keep doors open for new people to believe in and have some important things in common. Wonder if there's a market for a Hispanic Christian nationalist who opposes capitalism but passionately supports for-profit MfA?

Yeah, I'm not being nice to his voters. Whatever, his constituents won't have two years to smarten up. The professional mindfuckers are already in their heads, just need their orders.

My only "conspiracy theory," not needing any wackadoo-ry at all, is that the NYT watched this candidate's antics playing out in their own living room and delayed reporting on him until after a Republican (him) was safely elected to that seat.

I figure they’ll order him to paint “Democrats Go Home” 100 times on the Capitol then tell him not to do it again.
