Why Americans shouldn't dismiss Shiny Happy People's Warnings of a Christian-controlled nation.

https://baptistnews.com/article/why-americans-shouldnt-dismiss-shiny-happy-peoples-warning-of-a-christian-controlled-nation/

"An unexpected twist to the documentary comes when the filmmakers show the grooming of future homeschooled politicians who would go into our nation’s capital to push for strict Christian views and policies. This information creates conflicting responses among viewers. There are the believers and the naysayers. There are those who feel personally attacked, who feel including this piece of information was so far-fetched, it was an unnecessary addition.

In my case, I watched this twist and nodded along in agreement because, well, it was no real twist to me. I already knew this about those like the Duggars because I used to be just like them."

The historical Jesus was, without doubt, one of the world's great teachers. But he was non-political, and he espoused such virtues as compassion, humility, moderation and forgiveness. Today's Christian nationalist movement seems to be the antithesis of everything he actually taught.

Jesus has been reduced to a useful commodity.

Religion and politics use each other to gain power and wealth.

not the other way around... at least, these people do. They'd have been burned at the stake in older days as a Heretic, saying (and trying to legislate onto others) they know the mind and words of God.

I used to be very tolerant of the Xians, choosing to educate rather than argue. No more... tolerance to the intolerant is simply appeasement. At which, they walk all over you and then either beat, kill, or throw you in jail.

...
But look at him now! Leonard Leo, 56, has made himself one of the most powerful figures in the United States. He’s put five—count ‘em, five!—justices on the Supreme Court: Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, Sam Alito, and John Roberts. A sixth, Clarence Thomas, is one of his closest friends. And, perhaps most impressively, he quietly led the 2016 crusade to deny Merrick Garland a hearing, when Barack Obama nominated the highly-regarded jurist to replace the late Antonin Scalia (another of Leo’s pals). In the lower courts, he’s been even busier. He’s installed so many judges on so many courts, it makes you wonder if he really is the instrument of God’s will he believes himself to be. I mean, there are only three branches of government. One of those three—arguably the most important one—is Leonard Leo’s domain.
...
But Leo’s is a dour, zero-sum faith—pure, inflexible, unswerving. Less inquisition, more Inquisition. And this is no act. He really believes this crap. When I asked if Leo’s faith was sincere, Tom Carter, who was communications director at USCIRF from 2009-2012, when Leo was the de facto chief, told me: “He believes he’s on a mission from God.” That mission is to mold the judicial branch to his liking, and in so doing, to do away with Roe and protections for the LGBTQ community.

Leonard Leo, Federalist Society co-chairman and board member of Opus Dei’s Catholic Information Center, facilitated the appointment of Supreme Court justices John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.

30 years ago, productions like that couldn’t reach an audience through streaming media, and the incipient www just wasn’t up to the task of wide-scale dissemination. Perhaps neural connections will get made if a critical mass of viewers binge-watch The Handmaid’s Tale, followed by Shiny Happy People. Without these productions, much of our population would remain oblivious of the plans the American Taliban have for everyone else.

On edit: not gonna edit. Just wanted to make it clear that I recognize Margaret Atwood’s work as fiction. My sloppy writing may imply otherwise. My point is expressing thanks that well-made accounts of threats to democracy can reach a wider audience. Dateline NBC and their ilk just don’t cut it.

I watched the whole thing over two nights. I am Christian (Orthodox) but I have no use for a state church, having seen what it has done in other countries, and I have no use for this kind of Christianity at all. You have to remember that these people already have their claws into government and unless they are stopped, it's going to get worse until we are living in a state controlled by their version of Christian nationalism. There's a reason my late ex and a lot of other people call them Talibangelicals.
