Can Government Create Jobs or Not?
Im confused by Republicans in Washington, and heres why: For most of President Obamas term, they have ignored the millions of jobs the Congressional Budget Office says the 2009 stimulus legislation created and instead argued that the government is incapable of boosting employment. Summing up the larger sentiment, Sen. John Kyl (R-Ariz.) in 2011 said government spending doesnt create jobs, and Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) insisted in 2010 that its not the government thats going to create jobs in this country.
Fast forward to the present debate over impending budget cuts. Incredibly, the same Republican Party that once insisted the government cant create jobs is now barnstorming the country telling us the government can, in fact, create jobslots of them.
This isnt an exaggeration. As The Hill newspaper reports, Republican senatorsmany of whom suggested government cant create jobsare hosting town hall meetings to sound the alarm about how proposed defense spending reductions would cause significant job losses and therefore hurt the economy.
Ayottes rhetorical paroxysms are especially illustrativeand perplexing. In a CNN interview to promote the events, the New Hampshire senatorthe same lawmaker who said its not the government thats going to create jobsimplored Americans to think about [the Pentagon cuts] in terms of jobs, 136,000 defense jobs in Virginia. They have to issue layoff notices before the election, so members of Congress need to come together on this.

(31,780 posts)Don't want to admit that a PROVEN method for the government to create jobs is through infrastructure development and renewal.
If you hire workers to build bridges and roads and renewable energy backbone - they spend the money they earn. . . At restaurants, grocery stores, shoe stores, automobile dealerships, home improvement. The people who take the money from them then engage in b2b spending, as well as expanding hiring. Their employees do as the infrastructure workers do . . . And it snowballs from there.
The Republicans would rather spend money on defense to destroy other countries so their buddies can make a buck.
So they lie to themselves and weak minded people who believe their lies.

(62 posts)The Hoover administration and the banks ruined the economy in this country and dumped it in 1932. That sound a little familiar to you? When Franklin Roosevelt's administration started the CCC, the WPA, the TVA, RFD, Social Security etc. the Republicans couldn't stand the idea but things were in such terrible shape it not only continued but they watched Roosevelt reelected three times. It took eight years and our involvement in the second world war to get things straightened out. Keep the faith.
