Romney-Ryan Bet on Greedy Geezers
August 13, 2012
Exclusive: Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan were quick to assure U.S. seniors that they will be grandfathered in to todays Medicare even if younger Americans get stuck with an inferior system a bet that the selfishness of greedy geezers will grease the way to a Republican victory, writes Robert Parry.

The newly minted Republican ticket of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan is placing a big and some might say cynical bet that the stereotype of the greedy geezer is real, that Americans now eligible for Medicare or close to it dont care that the popular health program wont be there for their children and grandchildren.
In picking Rep. Ryan as his vice presidential running mate, Romney has taken on Ryans plan for replacing Medicare for senior citizens with a voucher program that will end the current fee-for-service program and shift more of the financial burden for health care onto Americans after they turn 65.
However, as Romney and Ryan quickly explained in a TV interview, the Ryan plan wouldnt affect people currently on Medicare. In its current form, Ryans plan for turning Medicare into a voucher system (or premium support as Ryan calls it) wouldnt begin until 2022.
Since senior citizens vote in higher percentages than other demographic groups, Romney and Ryan are trying to split the current Medicare recipients away from those Americans in later generations. The reasoning goes: If todays seniors think that theyll still get theirs, they wont care that their kids and grandkids might be stuck with an inferior program costing each one more than $6,000 extra. ..............(more)

(8,084 posts)I have two parents over 70 who worked very very hard their entire life. My mother worked a 3rd shift Job, and would then go and clean houses during the day, Sometimes she wouldn't get to sleep til 2pm. Then she would wake at 9pm and work all night with Mentally challenged men who couldn't care for themselves. It was a dangerous job, she had to be trained to physically restrain these men without harming them, in case they got out of hand. and she was strong but tiny weighing 110 lbs at 5'8".
My father worked in Foundry making American auto parts for American cars. he once almost died when hot melted metal exploded in his face and rolled down his stomach. Believe me when I say my parents were very very hard workers.
But between them they never made more than 45k as hard as they worked doing jobs that needed to be done for this country. the pay was allows just alittle more than beans.
I believe my parents have earned the right to be taken care of by a country they worked so hard for most of their adult lives.
And I also believe people work harder at the bottom than the ones at top and we should take care of our elderly citzens for all their years, of service.
Republicans act as if the years we spend making our contribution to society doesn't matter. But always remember the Wealthy get rich off the backs off people like my mother and father, and like you and I. As long as we do something to contribute we are helping people like Mitt get Richer and richer.
Every time you by a gallon of gas, groceries, pay taxes, sales tax, incom,e. If you purchase from a small business, or a large one. if you by a big house, or a tiny condo. Even if you commit a crime and get caught, guess what you help somebody else get paid.
Because we do so many things to contribute to the wealth of not just our country but around the world. We should be assured that at somepoint, some one will toss a little contribution our way. when we can't do it anymore. And that is why we should always take care of our older citizens, and they should never have to worry about that. We should never have to worry, because God Willing we will all make it to our Golden Years!
