Shelby Foote's 3 Volume The Civil War. I have listened to it twice. It is my favorite. Followed by first three volumes of The Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones). Other favorites include Hamilton by Chernow, Truman by McCullough, John Adams by McCullough, 1776 by McCullough, Lonesome Dove by McMurthry, Andrew Jackson by Brands, American Gods by Gaiman, I Claudius and Claudius the God by Graves, and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Heinlein.

I love audible.com.

I'm a woman and a Quaker with little if any interest in stories about war, but damn, that book is astounding.

A history of the people who were caught in the lands between Germany and The Soviet Union before and during WW2. Poland, the Ukraine, Bellarusse (sp), Latvia, the Baltic countries. These people were caught in the grinder between Hitler and Stalin. Tragic, tragic, tragic.

I'm always amazed when I pick up their books.

Thomas Frank - "What's the Matter With Kansas?" and "The Wrecking Crew" (I haven't read his new one yet)

David Cay Johnston - "Perfectly Legal" and "Free Lunch" (Again, haven't read his latest one)

Greg Palast - "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy" and "Armed madhouse" (Haven't read his latest either)

As a bonus, check out "Confessions of an Economic Hitman" by John Perkins

9. A Trilogy

Nov 2012

I recommend these three:
Parting the Waters: America in the King Years, 1954-63
Pillar of Fire: America in the King Years, 1963-65
At Canaan's Edge: America in the King Years, 1965-1968

I liked At Canaan's edge most, but I think you need to start from the beginning.

RE: John Perkins. He's a bit of a liar and con man, I think.

Sprawling, rollicking story of a Manx sea captain forced to take a ship of fools to Australia. Funny and tragic, read by Simon Callow who gives every one of the many characters a distinctive voice.

11. Stieg Larrson's trilogy:

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The Girl Who Played With Fire

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest

Also, check out your local library to see if they have free audio downloads. The local library where I live has both e-books and audio books available for download. A lot of times before I buy a book from Audible or Amazon I check to see if I can get it for free from the library. For example, I just listened to No Easy Day, the book about the mission that killed Bin Laden. It was an interesting book and expanded beyond just the raid to about Seal Team life.

14. Ever LOSE your credits for having too many or for cancelling Audible subscription?

May 2014

I have been seeing tons of complaints around the web about Audible.com’s practice of seizing book credits that its users have already paid for.

Has anyone lost Audible.com credits after cancelling? Or lost credits for exceeding their monthly carry-over limit?

I am an attorney working on this issue and would love to speak with anyone who has experienced any loss of Audible.com credits. Our communications would remain confidential.

Feel free to contact me directly: smithlowney_classaction@igc.org

Thanks!
