Where did it go? Australian scientists un-discover phantom Pacific island that appears on world maps

A group of Australian scientists have declared that an Island in the South Pacific that appears on maps and Google Earth doesn't actually exist.

Sandy Island was thought to be somewhere midway between Australia and the French-governed New Caledonia, but after scientists went looking for it during a geological expedition they declared that it doesn't exist.

The supposedly sizeable strip of land, which would have been within French territorial waters - if it existed, does not appear on French government maps.

Scientists from the University of Sydney, aboard a new Marine National Facility research vessel, Southern Surveyor, went looking for the island but instead only found 1,400m (4,620ft) of deep ocean.
