The idea of gun control, having been dormant for a good part of the last decade, has come back with a vengeance after the recent terrible elementary school shooting in Connecticut. Both sides need to take a step back, take a deep breath, and look at simple facts.
Listen I know that this is a heated issue. But lets put things in perspective.
No one wants to take away the guns of law abiding citizens who want to have a gun in their home for protection. The straw man created by the gun lobby of a scary liberal going around and collecting guns is simply a fantasy in the deranged mind of conservatives.
The second amendment indeed protects the rights of law abiding citizens to own weapons for personal protection. The second amendment does not, however, create a blanket right of all Americans to purchase whatever firearms they like. As has been the case with all constitutional rights, you have to weigh the right itself against the protection of the common good.

(26,293 posts)that requires people who want guns to actually join a militia group formed and operated by the federal government? They could have strict rules for membership thus hopefully it would weed out the real crazies while allowing those who arent batshit crazy to legally own guns still.
