Scots give Trump the finger

The Scottish government delivered a blow to US businessman Donald Trump today after they approved an offshore wind project off the coast of Aberdeen.

The 11-turbine European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre is bitterly opposed by the US billionaire who has moaned that it will spoil the view from his nearby golf course.

Scottish Energy Minister Fergus Ewing said: "Offshore renewables represent a huge opportunity for Scotland - an opportunity to build up new industries and to deliver on our ambitious renewable energy and carbon reduction targets."

The centre will be capable of generating up to 100 megawatts of energy, enough for 49,000 homes, almost half the number in Aberdeen, the government said.

Scotland already has almost 600 golf courses!

"Although with its tiny space, Scotland has an incredible number of golf courses, 579 to be exact! The oldest being the Old Course in St Andrews circa 1410 and the youngest being Castle Stuart opened on the 13th of July 2009. Scotland has also the biggest number of links courses in the world, 175!"
http://www.standrewsgolfexperience.com/component/content/article/50-did-you-know/235-scotland-has-almost-600-golf-courses

"Links" refers to a very specific type of golf course, but in the US it's common (and inaccurate) for any golf course that is relatively treeless to call itself a links course.

The British Golf Museum says that "links" are coastal strips of land between the beaches and the inland agricultural areas. This term, in its purest sense, applies specifically to seaside areas in Scotland.

So "links land" is land where seaside transitions into farmland. Links land has sandy soil, making it unsuited for crops. Such land was often, in times past, thought to be worthless because it was not arable for crops. But back in the mists of Scotland, someone had the bright idea to start knocking a ball around that land, hitting it from point to point. And from those humble beginnings, links golf courses emerged.

So a true links course is not any course that is treeless. The term "links" historically applies specifically to strips of land in seaside areas that feature sandy soil, dunes and undulating topography, and where the land is not conducive to cultivated vegetation or trees.

This small farmer, who's stood up to Trump and his entire battery of lawyers, is a national hero. I've been following this saga on a Scottish news blog, and love the fact that the Scots refer to that egomaniac, Trump, as "Wee Donald". And now, as the Scottish anthem, Flower of Scotland, goes, they've sent Trump, in defeat like England's Edward II, home to think again. It refers to the victory of the Scots, led by Robert the Bruce, over England's Edward II at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Forbes_%28farmer%29

Michael Forbes (born circa 1952) is a farmer, part-time salmon fisherman and quarry worker from near Balmedie in Aberdeenshire, Scotland who became known after his refusal to sell his land to billionaire Donald Trump who is planning to build an extensive luxury golf course complex in the area. Forbes's farm, which is said by Trump to be in a state of disrepair, has the words "NO GOLF COURSE" painted on a shed.

He attracted media attention in the United States for standing up to Trump. Forbes has insisted that he will "never sell" his land to Trump despite being offered a payment £450,000 in addition to a salary of £50,000 per year for an unspecified job. The plans to build the golf complex were rejected in late November 2007 by Aberdeenshire Council but were later called in by the Scottish Government, who gave approval in November 2008. He has been compared to the beachcomber character in the film Local Hero.

In August 2011, contractors hired by Trump fenced off a piece of land belonging to Forbes despite Forbes having the title deeds. The Trump organization is now closing in on Michael's home and have threatened to try to use a compulsory purchase order to forcibly remove him and his family from their land. Trump claimed that Forbes's property was a slum that would spoil the view from his new hotel. Forbes retorted that Trump can "shove his money up his arse."The Tripping Up Trump Campaign have banded together to challenge the Trump organization on this issue.

Michael and his struggle with Trump features in the award winning documentary You've Been Trumped, directed by Anthony Baxter and produced by Richard Phinney. His portrait with his wife Sheila by Alicia Bruce is held in The National Galleries of Scotland collection.

In 2012, Forbes won the 'Top Scot' award at the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Awards, provoking a strongly worded response from Trump.

(The Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Awards are annual awards given to notable Scottish people. It is sponsored by the scotch whisky company Glenfiddich. Nine awards are given out for art, business, environment, food, music, screen, sport, writing, and "Top Scot".] The awards were established in 1998.
