More than three years ago--in February 2010--President Obama announced that the Department of Energy would make an $8.3 Billion taxpayer loan to Southern Company and its partners for construction of two new nuclear reactors at the Vogtle site in Georgia.
That loan still has not been granted. Why? Because the utilities want a sweetheart deal that would put all the risk on the taxpayers. And the White House's Office of Management and Budget has refused to go along.
Today, Taxpayers for Common Sense released a new factsheet pointing out that once again, the loan deadline has been missed (was up on June 30, 2013) and that Southern Company's financial ratings are continuing to plummet.
It's time for the Department of Energy to withdraw this loan offer. Please tell new Energy Secretary Moniz that his first job as Energy Secretary is stop this loan now.
