DAILY MAIL COMMENT: Syria and the errors we must not repeat

The news that the Prime Minister and US President are preparing a military strike against a Middle Eastern nation evokes a dreadful sense of deja-vu.

True, there are distinct differences between the impending assault on Syria and the Blair-Bush war in Iraq. For one, David Cameron and President Obama haven’t had to concoct a dossier of lies to exaggerate the threat.

Syria’s President Assad really does have weapons of mass destruction and has almost certainly used them on his own people in recent weeks. He richly deserves to be toppled and the prospect of further chemical attacks is truly appalling.

But we learned from Afghanistan and Iraq that military intervention is never as simple as politicians would have us believe.

A well thought out article. I was expecting something gungho from the Daily Mail.
