Four things to do after your credit card has been hacked: CNN Money, google business news

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

As many as 40 million Target shoppers who hit stores in the three weeks after Thanksgiving had their credit and debit card information stolen.

If you've visited a Target (TGT, Fortune 500) over the past several weeks, there are four steps you should take immediately to protect yourself.

1) Check your statement. It may seem obvious, but the first step you should take is looking for any charges you don't recognize on your statement.

Don't just look for large charges, either. Hackers often ping an account with micropayments of only a few cents to check the viability of the account. So if you see purchases of 6 cents or 11 cents, that could be a sign your information has been compromised.

2) Call your credit card company, bank and Target. Credit card companies generally offer customers fraud monitoring services at no cost, and customers aren't on the hook for any fraudulent charges. Typically, the card issuer or the merchant is responsible for those costs.

Unfortunately, there is a bit of an ad at the end of this article. Still, note that credit card companies usually monitor unusual charges..I personally would not use a monitor service, but that is up to each reader. This hacking at Target is really something.

Here is an additional list with 9 things to do (excuse the link, ideas are still ok) :

The Federal Trade Commission has this information on lost or stolen credit, debt or atm cards :

Our PNPI (not card numbers though) was hacked/stolen from work back in Aug, but everything has looked fine on our credit reports. 75K people were current and previous employees were affected. We didn't want to interrupt/complicate the processes we had already started -- mortgager going out of business and mortgage changing hands several times, us refinancing, loan application for additional work on our house to complete the insurance rebuild. Figured we'd contact them (Kroll Svcs) in January once all that was over.

Now that it's actual credit card numbers, I'll take work up on their offer of 3 yrs free credit monitoring. It is 3 yrs from contact and we had a year to contact them. Most fraud isn't committed right away after the theft of data. I'm more worried about what happens after 3 yrs, when our SSNs, etc., are still out there, although certainly don't want our bank account, retirement/pensions to be emptied at any time.

I wouldn't have been any "worse for wear" since I don't usually shop at Target at all ---- except for Black Friday when I went to get something my niece wanted
