Iraq death toll exceeds 700 in February: U.N.
*Keeps getting better each month.
(Reuters) - More than 700 people died in violence in Iraq in February, not including nearly 300 reported deaths in western Anbar province, where security forces have been battling Sunni Muslim rebels since January, the United Nations said on Saturday.
The world body said local authorities had recorded 298 civilian deaths in Anbar, but that it could not confirm the figures independently due to the chaos in the desert region.
Outside Anbar, the bloodshed was worst in Baghdad, where 239 civilians were killed, followed by Salahuddin province to the north with 121 dead. A total of 1,381 people were wounded.
The United Nations said it had confirmed 703 deaths in Iraq in February, compared to 733 in January, excluding Anbar.

(70,635 posts)kicked the inspectors out in Feb. of 2003 when they kept reporting that
they were finding NO WMDs ..... Saddam offered to leave the country
and to allow unlimited inspections of anyplace in Iraq but w and company
said no to both deals and went ahead and started their unneeded war.
In a just world they would be tried as war criminals.

(20,176 posts)I mean, that number looks bad and probably is bad...but it doesn't just include sectarian violence and terrorism, it also includes murders, muggings and other "crime-related" deaths.
I'd like a metric to measure it against if someone can provide one. As comparatives, Iraq is #38 in population with ~34M people. Nations with comparable populations are Poland, Sudan, Uganda, Canada, Morocco, Peru, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Argentina, Algeria and Saudi Arabia. (#34-43, a population range of 29-40M.)
