Ranking Names Best States For Disability Services
An annual ranking of states offering the best services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities reveals a familiar but evolving landscape.
The analysis of disability services in all 50 states and the District of Columbia being released Thursday by United Cerebral Palsy finds top performers spanning the map. In previous years, the best services were largely clustered in the Northeast and West.
Arizona claimed the number one slot in the ranking for the third year in a row. Also rounding out the 10 best on this years list are Michigan, Hawaii, Georgia, New York, South Carolina, Maine, Massachusetts, Ohio and Missouri.
The analysis factors each states approach to promoting independence and productivity, ensuring quality and safety, keeping families together and reaching people in need.

The idea of what constitutes poverty needs a serious discussion in this country.
I am tired of hearing the poor do not pay taxes in this country.

(13,101 posts)I am holding on by the skin of my teeth. (Actually they are breaking and rotting out of my mouth, but no dental coverage)
I didn't even mention insurance on my property and truck.
There is little help for people trying to hang on to their homes and property in this country. (12 acres and a doublewide)
The powers that be do not care about the poor, the disabled, the unemployed, or anyone who falls between the cracks.

(30,099 posts)It is a fight we need to take responsibility for, no one is going to hand it over
to us without one.
Thank you for your input, and I wish there were substantial subsidies for you now.
Just a thought, have you a medical teaching hospital near you? If so, they sometimes
have a clinic where you can get dental work done...by dental students who are supervised
by credentialed dentists. The fees are small if any..the wait period can be long but once
you're in, they have helped many people.

(13,101 posts)There was just a big write-up in the local paper about the shortage of dental services for my county and all of the surrounding counties.
When I worked I had dental insurance and it still was very expensive with 5 root canals, 5 crowns, various fillings.
Mother had four children.
We all had horrible teeth.
Mom will be 90 on the 31st of August.
She has all of her teeth.
Crazy world.

(4,879 posts)Here in Texas he gets $708 and $43 in food stamps. You can't even rent an efficiency for that, so he has to live with me.
Yes the bar is very low.

(13,101 posts)If I moved in with someone my food stamps would be cut to 0.
I would no longer have a house payment.
They squeeze you from all angles to insure that you don't have an extra cent and I stay in constant fear of being homeless.
I suffer from Agoraphobia.
The thought of leaving the only place I feel safe is truly terrifying.
Sending good vibes to your brother and entire family.
Peace
Thank you for such a warm response. I have passed your message along to my brother.
The reason he gets any food stamps at all, is that, we have stated that he is his own household. We do not share food and he pays a monthly rent for his room and use of the residence facilities.
He would not survive otherwise. I myself, make poverty wages.
I am 15 years older than him and I fear for his well being. I understand your fears. My brother is not capable of navigating the world alone.
