Shades of an American Kristallnacht?

If the Republicans controlled all three houses of government, they could ram through the legislation theyve been concocting during the past decade or so: legislation powering up the assault on the environment, on health, on social services, destroying any kind of safety net for people, animals or the environment.
They could escalate the war on dissidents who dare to oppose their plans. In short order, the United States could turn into just another big banana republic, with a military-backed regime of elites governing through the indiscriminate use of fear tactics, with violence applied as necessary to keep the people in line.
It happened not so long ago in many countries in Latin Americathink Chile, Argentina, Guatemala, El Salvadorin the 1970s, when wealthy politicians wielding military power and complete control over the ballot boxes ruled their countries with iron fists, disappearing anyone who might remotely be a threat, including thousands of innocent students. Often the shift from democracy to fascist dictatorship happened literally overnight.
Lately I have been re-reading Margaret Atwoods marvelous sci-fi novel The Handmaids Tale, and finding it chillingly prophetic. In Atwoods dystopia, environmental catastrophe has rendered the elites infertile, and pushed them to withdraw into gated communities where food shortages are common, and people are regularly hung in the public square to keep everyone fearful and docile . . . .

(11,689 posts)I don't think the lack of control of all the branches of government has slowed them down a whole lot. It's not like the ship of state has made much of a course correction since the 2006 election.

(8,559 posts)... it does seem like the Republican Party is held up as some kind of horrific scarecrow puppet on one hand, and the Democratic Party as the ONLY practical alternative to avoid something like another Kristallnacht, on the other.
I have to admit that, at least to a degree, it works on me -- I do find the thought of a totally GOP controlled State utterly horrifying.

(57,936 posts)DUers were furious that I would mention the N for NAZI word.
If you know the history of Germany and Austria -- even as little as I know of it -- you would have seen the parallels between the Bush era and the pre- and early-Hitler eras. Uncanny and scary.

(1,831 posts)That would imply that the GOP would also endorse stripping Americans of their citizenship under "certain" conditions.

(844 posts)But then I knew that at least in Texas some 40 years ago the Republicans were planning to repeal the 2 term Presidential limitation and elect Nixon for live. If the Watergate hadn't happened to ruin Nixon's popularity it probably would have happened.
I knew that before Clinton was sworn in the Republicans were planing to impeach him, not matter on what charges. If Starr hadn't over reached and the Republican been such hypocrites it would have happened.
I knew that before Clinton was sworn in for his second term that Republicans were already calling Dubya "President Bush."
I have told those stories endlessly since 2002. Now will somebody believe me?
Nothing that has happened in the last 30 year is has reduced freedoms and rights in this country has happened with out the Republicans planning it long ahead of time.

(8,559 posts)... the war mongering Neocon agenda was spelled out in some detail in the shocking PNAC document(s) -- these Pinky & the Brain psychopaths have been planning their world conquest for some time.
Speaking of Nixon, where would you say he was regarding foreign policy with respect to Obama? Do you think he would've gone along with all our present military misadventures, including our killer drone program?
