As Israel attacks Gaza, Jews elsewhere feel an impact

As the death toll in Gaza rises, so does anger against Israel — and sometimes, by extension, Jews — in Europe and elsewhere.

We should mark how unique this is. There’s a very large, and often very rich, Russian community in London — and there are no attacks on Russians or their mansions, restaurants or churches because of the Russian seizure of Crimea and sponsorship of uprisings in eastern Ukraine.

People from Sri Lanka didn’t live in fear when their government was pounding the Tamil Tigers into submission, with thousands of deaths. Chinese visitors are undisturbed by reaction to their government’s suppression of dissent in Tibet and its jailing of dissidents. And quite right, too. Who knows what Russians, Sri Lankans or Chinese abroad think about their governments’ actions?

Jews, by contrast, are held responsible by large numbers of non-Jews in Western democratic countries for Israeli actions. That’s all Jews, whatever their views on the Israeli response to the rockets fired on Israel from Gaza. Sometimes, the reaction goes much further than disapproval.

Over this past weekend, a synagogue in Paris was firebombed, and there were a couple of small demonstrations featuring signs saying “Death to Jews.” The attack further inflamed tensions that were already running high since before the latest violence in Gaza. In May, four people died when a gunman opened fire in a Jewish museum in Brussels. Many of those interviewed said they were not surprised, given the rise in the level of verbal and some physical violence against Belgian Jews in the past decade.

I. THE BURIAL OF THE DEAD

APRIL is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers.
Summer surprised us, coming over the Starnbergersee
With a shower of rain; we stopped in the colonnade,
And went on in sunlight, into the Hofgarten,
And drank coffee, and talked for an hour.
Bin gar keine Russin, stamm’ aus Litauen, echt deutsch.
And when we were children, staying at the archduke’s,
My cousin’s, he took me out on a sled,
And I was frightened. He said, Marie,
Marie, hold on tight. And down we went.
In the mountains, there you feel free.
I read, much of the night, and go south in the winter.

What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow
Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man,
You cannot say, or guess, for you know only
A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
And the dry stone no sound of water. Only
There is shadow under this red rock,
(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),
And I will show you something different from either
Your shadow at morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.

Or are you being a dick because of nothing?
Not even the poem _Wasteland_, TS Eliot?

Because you could've fooled me, since an excerpt from that is all that I posted.

Forget your paranoia for a moment. Just read the poem.

I'm not the kind of person who's going to get between you and TS Eliot.
Don't expect me to turn this into some battle between you and I.
If you don't want to read the fucking poem, then don't.

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

Calling Behind the Aegis 'a dick' is rude (and in #13, this poster says BtA shows 'paranoia' for wanting to know why a poem excerpt is relevant to an article about current events). delrem also seems to be trying to disrupt the thread by posting the excerpt twice with explanation of why they think it's relevant.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Thu Jul 17, 2014, 07:35 AM, and the Jury voted 3-4 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: The alerter is obviously the product of to much inbreeding.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Disrupting indeed. Thank you alterer for a good explanation. I originally planned on leaving the post.

Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: delrem is being completely obnoxious in this thread. It isn't specifically for the word "dick" that I vote to hide, though that contributes to it. I am voting to hide because of delrem's ridiculous behavior.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: If we can hide posts for using "the B word" in an equivalent context, it seems reasonable to hide this one for using "the D word." HIDE IT.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given

I'm alarmed that the jury vote was as close as can be.

This indicates something about DU, to me - of course, since I'm the protagonist.
I try to be objective on top of that.

But for the life of me, I can't find anything in my postings in this thread that are remiss in any way at all.

But perhaps there is a level of behavior beyond which there is a tendency to blame ethnicity. Russian, Sri Lankan and Chinese atrocities were not well covered, not particularly large in scope (numbers/time), and so do not shock the conscience to quite the degree that, say, the Holocaust did. Jewish treatment of Palestinians has been so brutal and has gone on for so long that it is beginning to be a horror that the eyes of the world are unable to turn away from.

Similarly, how many people attach terrorism to Muslim and/or Arab peoples, and so resort to firebombing mosques?

It is all over the place. What are you trying to say?

Similarly, how many people attach terrorism to Muslim and/or Arab peoples, and so resort to firebombing mosques?

This OP is about anti-Semitism, but there were certainly cases of Muslims, Arabs, and suspected-to-be Muslim/Arabs attacked after 9-11, and many times since. Is that "legitimate" or "expected blowback?" Or, is it just plain, old fashioned bigotry?

Jewish treatment of Palestinians has been so brutal and has gone on for so long that it is beginning to be a horror that the eyes of the world are unable to turn away from.

Your remarks there show part of the problem. It isn't "Jewish" treatment, it is "Israeli" treatment.

Now, that is possible Russian separatists were responsible for the shooting down of a civilian airliner, do you think it is acceptable for a Russian to be beaten in Brighton Beach? Or would that be bigotry?

After seeing a part of your comment, you're doing exactly what the article is talking about, blaming Jews as a whole for the violence there. "Jewish treatment of Palestinians has been so brutal", what's that supposed to mean? I am a Jewish woman and I don't condone nor am I responsible for any of this violence. This isn't Jewish treatment it's Israeli treatment. I've got four words for your incredibly ignorant comment. NOT IN MY NAME.

Turkish Jews urged to apologize for 'Israeli killing of Muslims'

Radical newspaper affiliated with Prime Minister Erdogan accuses Turkey's Jewish community of encouraging 'murder of children' in Gaza.

"You came here after being banished from Spain," Yeni Akit correspondent Faruk Köse wrote Wednesday in an open letter to Hakham Bashi, the chief rabbi of Turkey's Jewish community. "You have lived comfortably among us for 500 years and gotten rich at our expense. Is this your gratitude – killing Muslims? Erdogan, demand that the community leader apologize!"

In the right-wing newspaper's editorial, Ali Karahasanoğlu wrote: "After the barrage of missiles which hit the capital city of Tel Aviv, Israel has been pushed into a corner and is crying out for a ceasefire, which at the moment only serves Israel and the United States.

"The IDF is using forbidden weapons, intentionally killing children and murdering Muslims for the sake of murdering Muslims. Hamas is unprepared to accept dictations from Israel and the US, and will only lay down its weapon after its understandings are accepted.

"While all this is happening, the journal of the Jewish community in Turkey, 'Shalom,' is referring to the murder of children in Gaza as 'taking care of terrorists
