anybody who can believe the world is 5000 years old, and that jesus will show up to save us, and that the rapture is in the near future, can be made to believe anything..

Newt's pronouncments are pretty lightweight for a "real conservative"

2. Couple reasons

1. A lot of Evangelicals love a good redemption story and are purposely naive enough that as long as you agree with their political and moral opinions, they'll give you as many last chances as you need.
2. Evangelicals don't give a damn how they accomplish their goals of turning women into cattle, turning America into a theocracy, etc. They're right; Jesus agrees 100% with them and they know it. Newt is singing their song right now, and they feel if they can get him elected, he'll be beholden to them as president.

It's more number 2, but you have to allow for a bit of number 1.
