HSBC laundered $881 million for drug cartels and violating sanctions. They paid a $1.2 billion fine. But there has not been a single criminal charge brought against any individuals.

(4,835 posts)The only information they were willing to pass on was that it was the fault of the justice department.
Their performance does not warm the cockles (whatever they are).

Perhaps The Senior Senator from Massachusetts Question should have been two part.
1. What does it take to shut one of these banks down when the commit these crimes, and
2. What would it take to remove the incompetent people at Treasury who aren't capable of enforcing the law or making sure that others enforce the law in the future?
On edit 1: Nobody at HSBC has gone to trial for money laundering drug cartel money. A low-level punk that sells herb to a narc will see more jail time then any of these guys combined.
On edit 2: Perhaps if the bankers were smoking herb while they were money laundering then AG Holder would have take notice?

(32,626 posts)We did just elect her as our senator. Perhaps she can serve one term, or one year anyway.

(24,721 posts)when giving Sen. Warren a (non) answer!
"You know", said Sen. Warren, "if you're caught with an ounce of cocaine, the chances are good that you're going to go to jail. If it happens repeatedly, you may have to go to jail for the rest of your life. But, evidently, if you launder nearly a billion dollars for drug cartels & violate our international sanctions, your company pays a fine & you go home & sleep in your own bed at night -- every single individual associated with this. I think that's fundamentally wrong."
She's impressive.

(9,126 posts)Her statement at the end was a thing of beauty. I love how she keeps going back to the question, not allowing them to squirm and doublespeak out of the truth. More please! I wish everyone could watch this as this is the lancing of a terrible wound in our corrupt system and I wish she had more of her peers supporting her.

Perhaps the banking committee should invite Mr. Holder for an afternoon with Senator Warren.

(9,298 posts)she's smarter than any of these guys, and she's only just begun. She needs to hear from people from all over the country, not just Massachusetts (which had the intelligence to elect her in the first place,) that we support her with our words and our money.
