Commenting on this video youtuber scribescribbler posted:
"This country is cannibalizing itself in the name of law and order, using the War on Drugs as the well-funded tool (which has wasted trillions of dollars and counting). Cannibalizing our communities while enriching those preying on us, and too stupid to get that the potential danger of messed up lives over moralistic laws intended to enrich the few beneficiaries without bettering the common good, applies to most of us. "
and in a subsequent post also said:
"It's really scary that so many people are too unintelligent to understand what the professor is explaining. What she says about the War on Drugs devastating results for the African-American community, it's becoming increasingly true for the rest of the country too. Only the children of the wealthy are protected from ruinous consequences imposed by the criminal justice system despite their engaging in the same behaviors as those of the other economic, racial, and ethnic communities. (8,559 posts)Professor Alexander is quite something, isn't she? I finished this video hoping I live long enough to see her or a woman just like her serving as POTUS.

(10,597 posts)...plain and simple. The Second Emancipation Proclamation.
The prison system is another one of those things that I would add to the list of Commons that should never have been privatized. The evil Corporatistas in this country kill two birds with stone in this whole debauchal: They have figured out a way to discriminate, and to make money from doing so, simultaneously. The wrong ones are in prison.
Thank you MJ24 for posting this informing lecture from Professor Alexander. This country would be a good place to start a Democracy, wouldn't it?

(16,350 posts)I heard her oh about a year ago. It crushes the soul to face this ugly truth, but we have to face it and we have to call it what it is -- the New Jim Crow. My heart sinks whenever I hear of a black man harassed, abused, accused, framed, beaten, and tossed away like garbage by law enforcement. It happens ALL the time. The case of Troy Davis put me over the edge. If I was president, I would push to mandate investigations into every instance of possible race-based targeting by police. I swear I would. Thank you so much for sharing this video.
