(7,976 posts)I remember how I felt when my brother walked through the front door from Vietnam on the day that Armstrong landed on the moon. Much happiness to the family.

(37,648 posts)if he had popped up after he'd been gone for a while, I can't say how I would've reacted. Not with a run and hug, for sure. I was surprised then, and am still surprised, when kids like their Dads.

(29,102 posts)I hope you were close to your mother or a grandparent or some other member of your family.
My family is mostly gone now and I miss them more than anything in the world.

(37,648 posts)That's why I said I was surprised to find out that, say, Pat in the neighborhood, her dad came home every night. I felt so sad for Pat. At least my dad stayed away for long periods of time. I didn't realize that other kids didn't dislike their dads.
I'm still surprised and cannot relate, as a 50-something adult, to the feeling of liking your dad. It seems unnatural to me to like your dad. I don't view this as a sad or bad thing. I guess because it's not like I lost anything. It's a feeling that was never there, so it just is.
