An uncle tom is someone who displays servile behavior, accepting a "second class" position willingly, or who tries to erase / deny their own background in order to "pass" among the dominant ethnic group. For lack of a better phrase, to be an Uncle Tom is to "act white."
No, no. What we have here is something called a "rented negro." This is a black person (though other groups also have "renteds"
who serves as a mouthpiece for white racist views, saying the lines for the white people thinking them, so that the white racist can then go "Look, a black person said it, it's okay!"
David Webb is not an uncle tom. He's not bowning and subservient to the whites, he sits with htem as an equal in this piece. Rather he says what they are "not allowed" to say for them, exonerating them of any guilt in the sentiments expressed.
Also, "Uncle Tom" is an undeserved epithet, based on unauthorized minstrel show versions of Stowe's novel that degenerate a strong black martyr into a servile, ancient geezer who backs up the ideals of racism and oppression.
