...I find it interesting that a African-American, Ernie Banks, would be named Mr Cub at a time when blacks were just beginning to be allowed in MLB. I'm not sure when he picked the nick name (hard to think of a better one) seeing how his career with the Cubbies started in 1953 and last till 1971. There weren't any far south major league teams in the early 50s but spring training was probably in Florida. I wonder if they let Mr CUb eat and sleep with his white teammates in FL?

I grew up in the Detroit area and am filled with anger and sadness at how poor ole Detroit has been swindled by the 1%, it ain't right! I spent some of my best young hours in the Det. Institute of Art. May they weather this storm of $$ vultures and come out shiny and fresh on the other side.
