Many of you have asked a broader question: Why should we get involved at all in a place that’s so complicated and where, as one person wrote to me, those who come after Assad may be enemies of human rights?

It’s true that some of Assad’s opponents are extremists. But Al Qaida will only draw strength in a more chaotic Syria if people there see the world doing nothing to prevent innocent civilians from being gassed to death.

The Italian citizens were starving because the occupying Nazis did not provide them with anything to eat.

Oh joy. Versus: Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan I, Afghanistan II, Iraq I and II, intervention in innumerable South American nations, Cuba, and so on and so forth.

The difference might be that we didn't become involved in a sectarian civil war but repelled a foreign power out of a nation, ie. a clear goal.

And wouldn't they be more inclined to blame us for it rather than Assad or Al Qaida?

Both contradictions regarding fact and internal contradiction regarding the US international role, and the President's role vis-a-vis congress and the people.

This doesn't bode well, regardless of our sudden hope.

We on the left opposed the Iraq invasion for good reason, and this Syria situation reminds of that whole lead up to war to overthrow Saddam...and the same could be said of when we took out Qaddafi. What is with our brutal hegemony in the Middle East???

I hear it's about a bunch of people who don't believe in Jesus.

Using the logic we've seen lately that means they MUST be Satan Worshippers.

Right?
