You and I are letting the billionaires eat up, and befoul our planet so that they, and only them, can have monstrous wealth.

We get NOTHING but a stinking, dangerous planet out of this deal. And yet we go along, do nothing, except recycle now and then.

Why are we allowing it?

Methane release could be controlled, independent of carbon usage. Methanotrophs can be introduced into potentially warming soil that would degrade the methane into inert components. Now imagine a genetically modified methanotroph that EATS EATS EATS 10x MORE AND REPRODUCES AT AN INCREASED RATE.

We have ways, we have the technology it's simply a matter of prioritization.

As far as animal die offs are concerned, eh, things die all the time. We also have the technology to speed up evolution and provide endangered species with genetic armor against climate change.

Bioengineering can be a great thing, unfortunately like everything else right now it is about profit. Bioengineering needs to prioritize long term sustainability of organics over profit.
