Was America Founded as a Christian Nation? (Original Post) AustinSanders Nov 2013 OP
Of course. That's why Christianity is mentioned so many times in the Constitution. Scuba Nov 2013 #1

document which establishes our government.......I'd guess that some 1776 religious wing nut said the "christian nation" thing to Jefferson, Paine, Madison, Addams, or Franklin, who instantly knew they had to kill this right now.
The Constitution replaced the Articles of Confederation, and right after it was done, The Federalists brought up the bill of rights. They killed a national religion first thing, for a reason.

Are they talking Catholic? Which kind?
Orthodox? Which kind?
Protestant? Which kind?
Non-denominational? Which kind?

Christians do not have a good history of getting along with each other. As soon as you establish a "Christian" state, you start getting bloody fights over which interpretation gets to should and shalt not on all the rest. No thanks!

Loosely abridged translation:

Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, "Don't do it!" He said, "Nobody loves me." I said, "God loves you. Do you believe in God?"

He said, "Yes." I said, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?" He said, "A Christian." I said, "Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me, too! What franchise?" He said, "Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?" He said, "Northern Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?"

He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist or Northern Conservative Reform Baptist?" He said, "Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Eastern Region?"

He said, "Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?" He said, "Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912." I said, "Die, heretic!" And I pushed him over.

“But unlike the work of the Puritan Fathers, the federal constitution made no reference whatever to God or divine providence, citing as its sole authority “the people of the United States.” Further, its stated purposes were secular, political ends:'to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty.” Instead of building a “Christian Common-wealth,' the supreme law of the land established a secular state...

There would be no Church of the United States. Nor would America represent itself to the world as a Christian Republic.”
