(135,425 posts)It's a finite block of time. What's more "useful" or important? Teaching an educational unit on talking/helping re: HIV/AIDS (which isn't eradicated, certainly, but it isn't the social issue that it is in SA), or teaching a phrase in a foreign language, imparting concepts of addition or subtraction, talking about a parent in jail (something SS did not too long ago), or addressing another social issue that is prevalent in our own nation?
I think it's great that Bill Clinton did that piece for SA SS. I just don't think that the US version of the program is "less than" because they tailor their show to their audience here. A suggestion that US SS isn't measuring up because they don't flop this set piece into their "curriculum" is just not supported, in my view.
Here, check this out--useful, don't you think? Of course, the folks at "Reason" magazine rather unreasonably ignore the fact that certain segments of our society are jailed at an alarming rate for bullshit offenses (e.g. a little weed), but the fact of the matter is, this kind of thing resonates with SS's target audience:
BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -
Sesame Street is taking on a big topic that is garnering plenty of commentary on the internet this week: What happens when parents end up in jail?
Sesame Street created an educational tool kit titled "Little Children, Big Challenges: Incarceration." It debuted this week.
It includes stories, tips and activities for caregivers and children who are coping with a parent who is in prison.
According to a 2010 study, more than 2.5 million grow up with a parent who is in prison. While some are praising the show for confronting a very real issue, others aren't in favor.
The magazine Reason wrote "Congratulations, America, on making it almost normal to have a parent in prison or jail."
