A new movie is coming out, about nudity and how bad that is supposed to be, and violence that is shown everyday. This is a you tube video from the director of that movie. Decide for yourself which is worse...violence or a nipple. .Planned to be released on June 1, 2014..Yes, this video does show some nipples, and a little police violence too. I recall that the movie Sin City got an R rating, so much violence (toward the end of Sin city there was a animated castration) and that film was praised..Here is the link at Internet Movie Data Base on "Free the Nipple" for more info........ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2298394/?ref_=nv_sr_1

(20,805 posts)...but seriously...
As a Brit living in the land of the "free" I have always been bemused by the reaction of puritanical horror to women's naked bodies versus the docile response to the veritable orgy of blood, murder, rape, torture and violence that is shown in seemingly every single primetime television show....
I think it was Marilyn Chambers who said it best "if you kiss a woman's breast it's 'X' rated, but if you cut it off it's 'R'..."

(38,613 posts)There's a movie called "This Film Is Not Yet Rated" that kind of discusses this. What's fascinating is that the MPAA, who decides all ratings, has a secret membership, and they don't actually tell film makers which parts of their films warrant certain ratings. It's a bizarre thing!

(11,518 posts)I'd rather my kids see a naked breast, and for that matter someone kissing a breast (all of which is of course banned on television), than all the senseless violence that's all over our television networks.

(1,555 posts)I consider myself a feminist. I'm very much a general pro women's rights person.
This, however, seems to me to be something of a distraction away from far more important issues.
I mean, don't misunderstand me, if the law permits women to be topless in a state or city, then those laws
should absolutely be respected. A woman should never be made to feel ashamed of her body, ever.
But it seems like, at a time where we're making progress on getting pressures applied toward pay equality,
healthcare and reproductive independence from the whims of the GOP and just in general shining a spotlight
on the inequalities forced upon women, focusing on public displays of breasts is perhaps the wrong framing of the issue.
It seems like instead of being reactionary and defensive, this should be an offensive, focused on the wrongdoers...shinning
a blinding light on the offenders and, for lack of a better phrase, making an example of them.
I guess perhaps I'm just tired of seeing the liberal side always on the defense... and it seems (to me at least) like this
video is just more defense tactics instead of punishing the offenders and sending a message to GOP ass-hats.

(20,219 posts)Exactly right. Feminism isn't about the right to show our tits. It angers me when this idiotic "issue" shows up again.
You can tell the bullshit level by the number of men suddenly becoming ardent voices for "women's rights" --when public display of breasts is the issue.
(And Maralyn Chambers' observation that kissing a breast is an X rating while cutting one off is an R is spot on. By the way. The issue is violence against women. Or to be more specific: male impulse control problems)

You work for Equal Rights you way, let other people do so in their way.
There is no one way to get this job done. It is not one problem anyway. It is many problems, adding up to subjugating way more than half the worlds population. It takes many millions of people world wide to work on a remedy and most of them will not think your way is the only way or even the best way. The grand goal is for Equal Right for all, not just women's rights. Women's Rights are only a part of it.

(265 posts)it would be a distraction. But this encompasses other issues as well; abortion politics, sex work, inequality in pay for equal work, poverty relief, etc. The laws are based on antiquated and absurd concepts and customs that should have been discarded a long time ago.
Take the case in Texas where a woman collapsed from an aneurysm. She had expressed to her husband that she did not want to be kept alive by artificial means if that situation arose. But because she's pregnant (18 weeks) the law says that the life of the fetus supersedes her wishes. That the law exists makes it unique to women (because only women become pregnant) and puts them at an unequal footing to men in terms of reproductive rights (No one questions a man if he wants to get a vasectomy. You don't see protests at vasectomy clinics, do you?)
If feminism purports to seek equality of treatment by law and custom for men and women, then it must fight all aspects where there is inequality. It's similar to the fight against the "separate but equal" legal concept that African Americans faced regarding racism and privilege in American society. When you think about it, equality on public transportation, isn't much either in the scheme of things, but the defeat of that social custom went a long way in the fight against discrimination.
Why is it taboo to see a topless woman? ( in NYS you can't serve alcohol in an all nude bar) This movie is rated NC-17 but no one has a problem with seeing Halloween whatever episode when Jason chops up victims for the umpteenth time. I can watch "Tony Montana" take on a Columbian hit squat with M-16 with a grenade launcher but I can't see a naked woman in that same movie. I can get a body count but not a nude body? Really?
Violence is OK but sex isn't? What kind of message are we sending here?

(36,827 posts)Betty Dodson was showing women how to masturbate on public access TV back in the 80's. She's certainly done more to liberate women (men too) than most others.

As I've said so many times.... I hope to hell there IS a "rapture" someday that takes all the ludicrous loonies off to sit at the right hand of their "god" and leaves this planet to those of us who think with our brain.

(80,708 posts)Sin City was crap, BTW. I saw it in the theater, back in 2004 or whenever. An audience full of hipsters and my takeaway was that it was like being beaten in the face for two hours with a cartoon steak.
Not impressed.

(618 posts)are the same as my feelings on the topic of gay marriage, abortion, birth control, etc. My feeling is: I DON'T CARE, and I don't understand why anyone else other than those directly affected DO care.
If the two guys or the two girls up the street from me want to get married, I DON'T CARE. Why should I? It's THEIR business, not mine. If the girl down the street from me is in an unwanted pregnancy situation, why should I care whether she gets an abortion or not?? It's NONE OF MY BUSINESS. If a woman wants to walk around topless in public, how does that affect me or the public? Why should SHE be arrested? Half the world population has tits...
People need to grow up, and treat and respect each other as adult human beings.

(561 posts)....and you will see ManBoobies that any cage dancer would envy and would have to pay a plastic surgeon a small fortune to get herself.
While an old fat guy will get them by just drinking beer.
In reality the old fat guys on the beach are much more indecent and disgusting. Yet, a few years ago it was considered almost obscene for a pregnant woman to go to the beach and expose her pregnancy in a swimsuit.
If we would see women boobies all the time after a while no one would pay attention, and advertisers would have to find another way to get our attention to sell us crap on television.
This is a social barrier whose time has passed. as far as NYC goes, in ten years it will be underwater anyway.
