(6,228 posts)I ask this honestly. I work for a large food company and have a couple friends in our research and development area. Additionally, my family participates in taste testing for new products.
Without exception, every time they taste test healthier options (lower sodium, less fat, etc), it does shitty in taste tests. We live in a society that wants quick meals, says they want healthy options, but then say they taste like shit. We need a cultural shift among our population.

(14,549 posts)Most lipids have a shorter shelf life than other calorie sources (carbs and protein) so it is natural to make shelf stable foods low fat. There is no fat and very little salt in soda and apparently it does not "taste like shit" because people drink it in massive quantities. It is fructose and other sugars that are doing most of the damage weight wise.
A recent study showed that 1 in 5 men eat pizza at least once every day. We shouldn't be trying to make radical changes in what people eat. We should make the things they already choose to eat better.
Make healthier pizza.

(31 posts)Low fat and low sodium foods do taste nasty, but fortunately they aren't necessarily healthier either. I think eating real food in sensible portions is what's healthy. I buy organic when I can, dairy with no hormones, and don't drink pop. Sugar isn't evil but we eat too much. Processed foods are full of weird chemicals and preservatives and we have gotten used to artificial flavors in foods until we don't know what the real thing tastes like. For example, I eat mostly organic corn tortilla chips, and now if I eat a Dorito its too strongly flavored for me. BTW, I hate cooking. I exist mostly on Amy brand organic frozen dinners.
