(24,328 posts)I understand why some people refuse to boycott.
They've been going there for years and know a lot of people that work there
To the Dorchester Collection Groups credit, they are making up the lost salaries and tips and stuff
But what seems to be missing by the boycotters critics I think are a few pertinent details:
1. It's not a boycott of the BHH. It's a boycott of Dorchester Collection Holdings. So it extends to more than that single property
2. Many critics of the boycott want to know when the boycotters are going to stop driving, etc because lots of oil producing countries have Sharia Law. The boycott, as has been explained by Leon, Branson and others is about the decapitation and stoning penalties. The boycott is not about Sharia Law
3. Many, like the Stonewall Group, oppose it because they don't think it'll work.
You never know until you've tried. Many seemingly failed protests were wildly successful
4. It's not just liberal Hollywood that's boycotting. Billionaire Richard Branson is one of the key people voicing his support for the boycott by both word and deed. No part Virgin Group spend a dollar at anything that's owned by Dorchester Holding.

(1 post)The protest is about the introduction of Sharia Law which, if broken in Brunei, will now result in a civil trial where, if one is found guilty, could be sentenced to amputation or stoning. This same law is in effect in many other nations to THE SAME EXTENT and with the same possible punishments, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The UAE also has Sharia Law on the books. Richard Branson not only flies his airline to Dubai, but also owns an island there. Sir Richard also made huge money with a Virgin Mobile deal in the ME with many a Sharia nation. The entire boycott is hypocritical and Sir Richard Branson is one of the biggest hypocrites of all. On the other hand, Virgin is my favorite airline and I wouldn't think to boycott his airline or jeopardize the jobs of his wonderful employees because of his misguided and unfortunate ignorance.

(24,328 posts)There is no boycott of Sharia Law.
There is no boycott of the traditional clothing or any other aspect of the law
And he has said he is NOT boycotting Sharia Law.
The fact that you acknowledge that he has holdings in the UAE (purchased many years ago) weakens your argument and your claim of hypocrisy
Your concern for the people working there is admirable.
But it's about stoning people to death
Though apparently that means less to you than the hotel
