1977 Black Panthers: 10 years after fight in SUPPORT of 'open & carry'

Local LA newscast from 1977 (the day Elvis was buried, which why the taper kept the beta tape this was extracted from.)

As governor of California, Reagan signed the Mulford Act into law in 1967. Written by Republican Assemblyman Don Mulford, the legislation was the most sweeping state edict in all the country, prohibiting the more or less free carrying of firearms in public.

Reagan freaked out in 1967 when open & carry Black Panthers came to the state house. The law was to disarm the Panthers ... the very assembly that passed that law was HONORING the Panthers 10 years later. A young Connie Chung does the next segment.

SORRY, HAVING SOME TROUBLE EDITING THE LINK!

there used to be restrictions (often in the South during integration) that prevented carrying guns in public. That is probably why you saw mostly people with rocks and sticks during the protests and riots of the time.

It was not just guns! In the early 70's, I was with a friend when we were in a traffic stop (expired inspection sticker or something silly) when the cop spotted martial arts equipment in the back. He threatened to arrest us for having open weapons.

With all the road rage and crazies here in Florida, I wouldn't mind a return to those regulations.

I along with my two cousins were taken into police hdqtrs for admiring some machetes, while wearing long hair, at the local hardware store. We were some suspicious looking dudes for our small town in 1967.
