(46,706 posts)In other words, Black Americans come from the African continent, so the heighten level of police power is justified.
It's not even much of a dog whistle. In King's stupid mind he doesn't see how referring to a continental divide is racism in the highest order. In the 21st Century, that kind of thinking has no place in Congress.

(63,210 posts)Nothing dog whistle about it. He's a proudly racist asshole proudly shouting his racism with a bullhorn in the halls of Congress.
And I fear that this will guarantee his reelection by a certain like-minded constituency.

BTW: A talking point the Right tossed into the echo chamber was, "They were no longer protesters when they started looting" and they'll include a video of some guys ripping off an auto parts store for some chrome wheels. Given their history of distortion, I wouldn't be surprised to find out the video was something that happened years ago that they link to this event. Even if it WAS a case of a few guys taking advantage of the chaos, it doesn't make the protests any less valid. The message from them is, "One of yours died. So what? What you did was worse."
To give you an idea of how sick these people are, during the Boston Marathon Bombing the Right was circulating a video of people seemingly ripping off t-shirts from a sidewalk concession. They are OBSESSED with the rights of PROPERTY and to them stealing is as bad as murder,...or in some cases worse because they feel a LOT of people deserve to die.
They are convinced that civilization is a fragile thing that will collapse without the iron fist of authority.

(10,495 posts)originally came from, not as black Americans. His problem is that he has never made an attempt to go to a predominately black area in his District (he does have a black neighborhood somewhere in his District, right?) and speak with them about their issues. To see first hand the condition of the public schools they go to. To understand the issues facing blacks in America.
Naw, that would anger his base! Besides, he just doesn't give a shit and would rather spread stereotypes and fabricated BS! The man is a willfully ignorant, hateful, power hungry piece of crap.

(81,265 posts)The problem isn't just him. It's the people back home who see fit to vote for jackasses like this. And elevate them to higher office where they can render toxic everything they touch on a much wider scale. WHO THE FUCK VOTES FOR UTTER FOOLS LIKE HIM????? WHO THINKS THAT'S SOMEHOW A GOOD THING??? WHO THINKS HE SPEAKS "TRUTH"??? WHO THE HELL THINKS THINKING LIKE THIS IS OKAY?
THAT is where we have to start, to confront the problem of people like steve king. How is he allowed to get where he is - to get as far as he has - to get into positions like Member of Congress? And I'm sure he flatters himself into thinking he is somehow fit for even higher office than that. Good Grief!!!!

(9,425 posts)How I am supposed to respect the opinions of individuals, (including most of my family), who across the country continue to vote Republican each and every chance they get? This is 2014 - I was born prior to 1950 - I would have thought by now the American populace may have evolved a bit more .....

(32,723 posts)When you tell them they're wrong about that they want to start a fight or act like you've got cooties or to simply call you "uninformed" and shut you out so your continuing to talk makes you the bad guy trying to stir up trouble. The really ironic part is when you leave, they trash talk you behind your back about how stupid you are to have gotten so brainwashed. Then they smugly parrot the latest talking points so they all feel confident that they are "informed".
During the run up to war they dusted off all the crap used during Vietnam by claiming we didn't support the troops or that we were against war on general principles and that's dangerous, or we were trying to relive the 60s or we were "useful idiots" or we were out and out TRAITORS.
Lately, they are being told the choice is to vote Republican or the minorities will take over. Expect to get a dose of extra hate tossed your way because now you aren't just a traitor to your country but a traitor to your RACE. You see? You don't understand what's at stake here. They're going to save you despite yourself.

(81,265 posts)That was SO Sixties. Well, this particular "dirty hippie" is now in her 60s, bathes regularly, tries to pay attention and stay informed, votes regularly, is still married to the same guy since the mid-70s, is college-educated, was a responsible member of the work force for decades, engaged in civic responsibility and regards tax-paying as the dues one owes - to the support and enhancement of the general welfare, and raised children who also bathe regularly, pay taxes as the dues they owe to the support and enhancement of the general welfare, and vote responsibly, and make educated, informed decisions about all things not just political, every chance they get.
And I'm a proud liberal. I wear that label as a badge of honor. So does my husband (another "dirty hippie" btw) and so do our kids.

Fucking clueless.
And with that shift the fact that the nation was lied into a war was to be forgotten.
Remember, you are to never get outraged at what Republicans do.

(81,265 posts)Glad you're here! I just got through posting about this very thing before I spotted your post here. Sheesh! I'm just a few years younger than you are. And I, too, can't believe this is 2014 and Bronze-Age thinkers can still achieve high office! That there are still enough voters who think THIS guy should go to Congress and exert that level of influence on the rest of us.
Man - I'm against voter suppression, but if it HAS TO exist...

(4,973 posts)Again, I wish the top 10 conservative idiots was still here to state the obvious. As far as Hank Johnson goes, I don't disagree with the bill, however is it really the issue here. To me, the issue is finding out the actions or motives of the police officer. The size of the gun or the thickness of his helmet wouldn't have made any difference.

I really could make no sense of it. I mean, if he's going to be racist, he'd better be clearer about it. Continental doesn't mean "African." And North America was a continent last I looked, so we're all continental in that regard (outside of Hawaii). But then, it seems de rigueur for Repukes to speak the language of stupid which make no sense if one speaks traditional English, but makes perfect sense if one is another stupid. Too bad King forgot, as so many of his party do when speaking this nonsense, that it was going out to all of us, not just those who voted for him.

"U.S. Senate Democrats are also making Steve King their conservative bogeyman du jour, blaming him for the lack of immigration reform efforts coming out of the Republican-controlled U.S. House.
Governor Branstad and Republicans around the country chipped in to help Steve King overcome Christie Vilsack in 2012. Conservatives across the state also rallied to his aid. This year, there are four federal races and a Branstad reelection effort that have all overshadowed Steve Kings reelection bid.
Despite holding a voter registration advantage of more than 50,000 in the Fourth District, Congressman King, his advisors and Iowa Republicans as a whole need to realize that they cannot take this race for granted. Jim Mowrer is a credible challenger. It is time to treat him like one."
