... the audience he wanted to speak to, i.e. those who do ridicule the greater good.

We sacked groceries at a local, family-owned grocery. One of my friends, also participating, came over to me, quite excited.

"There's Mr. Milam! He's one of the wealthiest people in town!"

Indeed, he pulled out a money clip stuffed full of hundred dollar bills (he was ostentatious about fanning through them to get to the inside of his loot).

The checker asked him if he wanted to donate to our cause. He smirked.

"No, I don't. I already give too much money away," he said.

In sharp contrast, every single person who came through our checkout lanes--many of whom had to use food stamps--gave us something, even if it was only a handful of change.

Since that experience, I've noted that those who have the least, seem to give the most.
