Some people have old-fashioned ideas about the kinds of pets up for adoption at shelters. Don't they realize that shelters are full of healthy, beautiful, loving pets? For every person who wants to fill that little void or enhance their already fabulous life, there's a cat or dog waiting to do just that.

(7,300 posts)And the one before him were adopted. I'm tearing up now in memory of them both. I had friends come over just to take my dog for a walk.
This really happened:
Friend A comes over and asks, "Can I take Sammy with me to the bar?" (It has outdoor seating and Sammy is a regular)
"Sure, have fun, take her water bowl with you.", says I. They leave. 10-15 minutes later another friend arrives and I invite him in. He notices right away the absence of Sammy.
"Where's Sam?"
"Out with friend A."
"How long have they been gone?"
"About 10-15 minutes."
"OK, I'll be back later."
I'll be getting another one soon.

(9,126 posts)There are beautiful, healthy, wonderful animals that NEED homes. Please, do not buy from a pet store or backyard breeder. Many people think there is something wrong with a pet's health or behavior if they are left at the shelter, but the vast majority of the time that is absolutely not true. You will never ever regret saving a pet's life.

(13,485 posts)have been adopted... except one. That was the one that never became family. It was a show dog with an AKA pedigree which upon reading was a pitiful line of inbreeding and irresponsible animal DNA cruelty. From that experience I leaned many things about how important it is to find dogs that best connect to the owner. Forget the breed and pedigree false sense of class. Look into their eyes, how do they see you... and in a simple moment you'll know if they have accepted you as their friend.
