(32,723 posts)They ... brought us parrots and balls of cotton and spears and many other things, which they exchanged for the glass beads and hawks' bells. They willingly traded everything they owned... . They were well-built, with good bodies and handsome features.... They do not bear arms, and do not know them, for I showed them a sword, they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance. They have no iron. Their spears are made of cane... . They would make fine servants.... With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.

(The last was originally supposed to be completed the previous Wednesday, but as is often the case with construction projects, they went way over budget. Hence the delay.)

(8,812 posts)Apparently, the principal sponsor for that episode was supposed to be Heinz Ketchup and after some heated back and forth in the boardroom, the network bigwigs decided that somehow it just didn't feel right. By the time the suits had a chance to corral a suitable focus group, America had moved on. Ann B. Davis talks about it wistfully on the DVD commentary.
