I've seen them get into the air and glide for quite some distance. They do seem to prefer running though.

Heavy bodies, short broad wings, steep energy expenditure. They puddle jump to get to safety; gliding does cut down on energy loss.

But I've seen them glide for over half a mile. We live on a hill. When I startle the flock occasionally while they're foraging in a field, they get air borne and glide across the valley. Amazing sight. If I startle one in the woods, they make a huge amount of noise to get in the air then disappear. The WKRP show was a classic.
