So what does everybody think- Did he take it too far, or do we as a society need more fathers like this?

(7,875 posts)- & the black community is greatly affected by gangs. Plus the person who sent it to me is black. So those are my reasons- I guess it's as appropriate to say all inner city communities, but I was in a black frame of mind when I posted it.

(11,012 posts)empathy from an early age (like from birth), is a better move.
Teaching might makes right doesn't work.
The father looks to damned young for this job and it shows.
Not a black community problem. Tension between fathers and sons is a universal problem. Parents who don't understand parenting is a universal problem.
I've made many mistakes as a parent, but violence was never one of them.

(23,720 posts)maybe slaps him one time. Basically the dad invites the son to go gangster on him. The son refuses to.

(11,012 posts)was that of a larger, stronger, more experineced bully egging on someone who would not have a chance against him. What does that teach?

(23,720 posts)That if his son is tough enough to be in a gang, then he's tough enough to go gangster on his dad and if not, he's no gangster.

(3,580 posts)However I can understand the father being afraid for his son's future. This is the wrong way to handle this. Hard to watch.

(1,370 posts)At least he's involved and cared enough about his son to try and impress upon him that the choices he makes today could alter his life forever. Who knows what kind of mentoring he received as a kid. Maybe he's a former gang member and lost friends to gang violence. We have no background information at all. I wish them both the best!
I felt sorry for the kid though. If that guy was my dad I sure as hell wouldn't be "banging" as long as I lived under his roof.

(4,552 posts)I have a bad temper and had made the decision that I would not use any corporal punishment on my kids.
At 4 my son for many reasons was out of control. We knew it and daycare knew it. We sought help and were lucky to live in a state that provided substantial help. A team of 4 trained adults helped my family.
However I was informed that as the father I would paddle my son. Positive reinforcement would be the main tool but when that failed and the behavior was out of control I would paddle my son with an open hand on a clothed bottom. It worked and I only had to do it a couple of times. After that the threat was all that was needed.
He is now ROTC at a prestigious military college sporting a 3.8. His decision all the way.
I bet this father will not have to worry about gang banging again either.

(58 posts)My father was a violent person, sometimes for no reason. This man was giving his son a small taste of what it would be like in a gang. A very small taste. He was challenging his son to be a tough guy and his son seemed to be really shocked by it. What would be the best way to handle this situation? I am sure that everyone has their opinion but nobody out there knows his son like he does.
