Top Republican Strategist Denies Women Are Paid Less Than Men

This morning, during a heated discussion with Rachel Maddow on Meet The Press, GOP consultant Alex Castellanos denied that women make 77 cents for a man’s dollar in the workplace and noted, “there are lots of reasons for that.” Maddow expressed shock at the assertion, but concluded that it explained why Republicans and Mitt Romney are so hesitant to embrace the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, a law that helps women hold accountable employers who discriminate in the pay practices based on gender.

“Now we know, at least from both of your perspectives,” Maddow said, pointing to Castellanos and Romney surrogate Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), “women are not fairing worse than men in the economy that women aren’t getting paid less for equal work.” “It’s about policy and whether or not you want to fix some of the structural discrimination that women really do face that Republicans don’t believe is happening,” she added. Castellanos responded to Maddow’s policy argument by remarking on her passion, to which the MSNBC host took offense:

CASTELLANOS: It is about policy and I love how passionate you are. I wish you were as right about what you’re saying as you are passionate about it. I really do.

MADDOW: That’s really condescending. This is a stylistic issue. My passion on this issue is actually me making a factual argument on it.

He really acted like a smirky, smug adolescent asshole. Not to mention that it made me mad that he was given so much time to interrupt by Gregory - reminded me of the days of watching Bushco on tv- wanting to scream obscenities at the screen (and admittedly doing so which sounds a bit odd when you live alone).

are the words that came to mind for me as well. He was smirking as he interrupted her. I'm surprised he didn't pat her on the head, "there, there dear, don't get so excited". What a jerk.

On the plus side, however, you just know Rachel won't let this slide. I'm quite sure she will rehash the exchange on her own show, complete with facts and statistics.

6. Here is the main point as I see it.

Due to the (horrendous) Supreme Court ruling, unless you were psychic or you were in a workplace where everyone freely revealed their salary, you were not going to have an opportunity to seek legal recourse for unfair treatment.

A law was passed that said; you could have your day in court and if you could prove your point you could receive some degree of compensation.

If what Castellanos said was true, then the work would not be equal and you wouldn’t make your case.

What McMorris Rodgers voted against was a law to provide an opportunity to be treated fairly.

Rachel was on point and the rest was straw man BS.

I mean, I often say "there are a lot of reasons for that", because the point is not that employers are saying "here's a woman, we can pay her less" but that a lot of factors are working together to make this happen (everything from women being expected to stay home with kids when they are young to the social fact that women apparently almost never ask for more money when they're made a job offer -- I was astounded to find that out because I was always taught to do that but apparently women aren't.)

15. There are other aspects to this issue ...

Rachel was almost good enough, but she was alone on the panel and didn't get in the last word. It is crucial to get the last word on "Meet the Press."

Notice that the mf*ing moderator didn't "Moderate." I *hate* Meet the Press," thereby favoring Mitt Romney's surrogates. I hate that guy and I hate his show.


And the other aspect: Employers can discriminate against women, but they can also discriminate against men, too. In fact, they are working as hard as they can, to bring in low-wage immigrants from asia (especially India) to displace more experienced employees, who are more productive (and are paid more).

So, while this looks like a womens' issue today; it really is an immigration issue and a mens' issue as well. It's just that Rachel doesn't see it, and men aren't organized well enough to get her attention -- and neither men nor women can see how low-wage immigrants are displacing them even here, in domestic jobs.

This issue wouldn't exist if employers paid the same wage to the same individuals with the same skills and the same experiences. That's the REAL issue that we ALL ought to push for.

Today's Republicans are nothing more than disgusting slime bags. David Gregory is a total asshole jerk-off nobody. Any more you can tell when a Republican is lying, their lips are moving.

I have absolutely no Republicans who are friends. At best, they are only acquaintances who I tolerate as long as they keep the mouths shut. I find it impossible to actually be a friend to someone who I have absolutely no respect for their beliefs. In the past I have been close to several, but they have became so damn extreme and spewed nothing more than outright fabrication that I didn't care to be associate with them.

Some of these very same people have now fallen on hard times, however, I have little sympathy for some of these people since they supported their own destruction. How smug and self assured they were until they were on the chopping block and even some ridiculously attempt to blame the very people who support the middle class for the economic disaster. I am convinced that the whole damn system will have to collapse before the people come to the senses.

Near the end of the 1990 U.S. Senate race in North Carolina, Castellanos produced an advertisement for incumbent Republican Senator Jesse Helms, who was then trailing Democratic challenger and Charlotte mayor Harvey Gantt, an African-American. The ad shows the hands of a white man crumpling a job application rejection notice as a narrator intones, "You needed that job. But they had to give it to a minority."The ad then references Gantt's supposed support for racial quotas and Helms's opposition.

Castellanos is a reptilian hominid. The GOP establishment is owned by them. They're serpents who walk upright, coldblooded and big brained. The medical profession refers to them as psychopaths. I think they're just subhuman assholes in suits with big bank accounts.
