in Marseille, France and late at night I'd listen to the hit parade coming from radio Luxembourg broadcast in English. That's where I first heard this tune and they were playing it often. Great tune. Rest in peace Mr. Sledge.

Cheers! ...and thank you, Percy. I especially remember slow dancing to that tune at the Junior/Senior prom (my girl friend was a Junior; I was not) in the Eiffel Tower's mezzanine ballroom. VERY memorable!

on the Quai D'Orsay. It was my freshman year of college after which I returned to the States. The American School of Paris I believe is a high school, right? I remember seeing American students from that school who had formed a four-piece rock band appearing on French TV in 1969 to play a tune they'd written. Your prom sounds like a wonderful memory.

Were two of the band members twins? Oh, and yes, ASP was an elementary thru high school. At the time it was located in the Chateau Du Berry.

Those were WILD times! We lived in St Cloud, up the hill from the American military's high school. I was not a military brat, used to sneak into the PX though. Our "General" was General Mills Inc. (my dad was there to introduce Europeans to Betty Crocker and Cheerios!). We were there when De Gaul kicked out the American military so those were some trying times to be an American (kid) in Paris.

..from "The Commitments", but here's the quote (in the confessional, with the old priest)
Steve Clifford: [in confessional] Used to, when I studied I would sing hymns, but now all I can sing is "When A Man Loves A Woman" by Marvin Gaye
Father Molloy: Percy Sledge.
Steve Clifford: What?
Father Molloy: It was Percy Sledge did that particular song. I have the album.
Steve Clifford: Oh…

Much funnier with the brogue…"Parcy.."

RIP Mr. Sledge.
