In the very next scene, Claude Rains says he's shocked that gambling is going on. The croupier who says "your winnings, sir" is the great Marcel Dalio, one of the stars of the French cinema who played major roles in such Renoir films as The Grand Illusion (with Erich von Stroheim) and the Rules Of The Game. Dalio like Erich von Stroheim was a Jewish actor who fled Europe when the Nazis invaded and had first hand knowledge of the environment being portrayed. That movie is one memorable scene after another. Incidentally, the lady who cries as she sings La Marseillaise in the first clip above was Dalio's wife, Madelaine. The fact that her tears are probably very heartfelt and not just acting, because she and her husband had to flee their homeland, adds a very touching dimension of reality to that scene.

(8,812 posts)Although I'm partial to La Nouvelle Vague, I've seen nearly all of Renoir's films at least once and own La Grande Illusion and La Règle de jeu.
