(277 posts)A similar thing happened to us about 10 years ago in CT. A baby fawn, not more than a few hours old, was found right in our backyard. My daughter, who was about 7 years old, walked right up to the fawn and it immediately started to bond with my daughter -- which we then thought was a big mistake. The baby fawn was not afraid at all and was following my daughter around the yard. You should not try to handle a baby fawn at all -- because it will try to bond with you and you don't want that to happen.. We called the animal shelter, and they told us -- the mother WILL COME BACK. Just leave the baby fawn exactly where you found it.
And then about 8 hrs later, just at sunset, the mama deer came back and they were reunited.
The fawns will instinctively freeze if there is any danger. They cannot outrun anything when they are that young, so they just drop and freeze. They also have a natural "non-smell".. so predators actually cannot smell them.

Why this was so emotional for me, I don't know, but that really moved me.

(656 posts)Here is a story that i have from 4 days ago, i and my husband witnessed a deer being hit by a car on route 88 in Oneonta NY it had 2 babies, the mother was killed instantly, we and others at the scene called DEC minutes after the collision. We were all told to just push the babies off the edge of the road and to leave them, one of the bystanders just could not do it and took both of them home, and i am glad to report both are doing just fine and will be raised and released in the fall. The moral of the story is forget calling the appropriate authorities they do nothing any how.

(656 posts)The people who took the babies were told by a state trooper that if they were caught they would be in trouble, but the people didn't care. They made the statement they had done it several times over the years and simply didn't care about the laws, the state trooper who was at the scene was great, he went and fetched a large box for transport and helped round up the peanuts and wished the people luck and asked if he and his family could visit.

(11,012 posts)proper licensing. And if the deer bond too closely to the humans raising them, they can't be released into the wild.
The agency responsible for placing these deer were remiss in not telling the caring witnesses where to take the babies since they obviously were not going to do it themselves.

(656 posts)That nothing would get done, as for a license the people simply didn't care about it they said they had dealings with the DEC before and they were a bunch of heartless slobs.
