President Obama is about to take a trip to Alaska. In advance of the trip, he changed the name of Mount McKinley back to its original name Denali." Ana Kasparian (The Point), John Iadarola (Think Tank), and Jimmy Dore (The Jimmy Dore Show Podcast), hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"President Obama announced on Sunday that Mount McKinley was being renamed Denali, using his executive power to restore an Alaska Native name with deep cultural significance to the tallest mountain in North America.
The move came on the eve of Mr. Obamas trip to Alaska, where he will spend three days promoting aggressive action to combat climate change, and is part of a series of steps he will make there meant to address the concerns of Alaska Native tribes.*

"Mount McKinley" was a conspicuously bad name for the mountain; good on Obama for fixing it.

(50,983 posts)1. I wonder if Obama did this just to make their heads explode.
If so, I hope he thinks up more stuff to do that will piss them off. TYT make it fun.

(7,875 posts)2. Just remember, McKinley was a Republican...
I'm sure if he'd been a Democrat, the RWNJs would be fine with changing the name.

You mean you took a mountain named for a white man and gave it a native American name?????
It's too easy to imagine that.

Now, if Philadelphia would only reverse its renaming of Delaware Avenue to Columbus Boulevard (renamed in 1992 when a group of Italian Americans lobbied city hall).

(4,473 posts)5. There is a street in Chicago named after Mussolini's Air Minister, Italo Balbo.
It commemorates an epic flight across the Atlantic by a formation of flying boats. Good old Mussolini had a film made about the feat in which he played a starring role - even though he did not actually take part in the flight.
Every so often, there is a call to change the name of Balbo Drive. Since few remember who Balbo was, no one bothers doing anything.
