For many progressive supporters of Bernie Sanders, they may not have come across an issue they disagree with him on. His gun control record may be that issue. While he has received a "D- rating from the NRA, and is no friend of the gun lobby, some critics on the left think he could be stronger in this area. Ana Kasparian (The Point), John Iadarola (Think Tank), and Jimmy Dore (The Jimmy Dore Show Podcast), hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Sunday pushed back against Democrats who said his gun control record was out of step with the party, arguing he's the candidate who can get beyond the noise and pass real legislation.
During an interview on CNN's "State of the Union," Sanders touted his lifetime voting record of D-minus with the NRA.
"I do not accept the fact that I have been weak on this issue," Sanders said. "In fact, I have been strong on this issue. In fact, coming from a rural state which has almost no gun control, I think I can get beyond the noise and all of these arguments and people shouting at each other and come up with real, constructive gun control legislation which, most significantly, gets guns out of the hands of people who should not have them.*

(3,649 posts)It can't be easy being a progressive representing a predominantly rural state when it comes to gun legislation. Folks who live in those areas tend to view guns as either recreation, tools for sustenance (hunting), or protection (usually from wildlife). Those aren't the types of people who we should be keeping guns away from. On the flip side, folks in urban areas tend to view guns as tools for violence, which makes it easy for Democrats like Dan Malloy (Gov. of CT) to pass strict gun control measures. We need to come together and recognize that there really are two sides to this issue and pass legislation that reduces gun violence in prone areas without restricting the rights of non violent gun users in rural areas.
