(17,194 posts)Much would depend on the tone of voice with which he said it. But Mr Trump is not one to think that training or education "qualifies" him for something, he believes he is "qualified" by right of being God's Own Trump. I'm sure many inmates of military schools "feel" like they are in the military, and as for training, it is not hard to believe that the NY Military Academy trained their cadets in some ways more than the military. Drill, for example, which is typically taken to ridiculous lengths in such schools.
It does not necessarily follow from the selected quotes that Mr Trump believes his time in the NY Military Academy was equatable to military service, and although I dislike pretending to be the Shadow, I'd wager he has nothing but disdain for the "losers" who allowed themselves to be dragooned into service.

(135,425 posts)...and that is .... bellicose!
I think Trump is "unfair" to the American people--he's a joke, a clown, a buffoon, and his balloon will pop soon enough. He's the pet rock, the Troll, the Mood Ring of the silly pre-primary season, and eventually he'll be tossed on the Heap of Forgotten Toys with the rest of the idiots from days gone by who amused people briefly but couldn't keep the bullshit up.
Then, the next guy up may not be Jeb!... but Kasich. We'll see...
He's the flavor of the month, but he's melting....

(17,194 posts)... but I think the author of this NYT article is forcing the quote into his desired shape. I really do doubt Donald thinks he has the same level of expertise or ability as the military thanks to his education -- rather, I think he believes the military are a bunch of losers and he is far superior to them. But the quotes selected only show him reminiscing to his biographer. When I was 16, I thought I was in love -- this is a true statement. Upon mature reflection (which I doubt Trump has), I would not call it love now.

And this was back in June, BEFORE he got really bloviating!

(31,151 posts)academy mind set is drill, drill and more drill. And the "walking tours" were primarily used as punishment. I remember my father, grandfather and great uncle often talking about all the crap they went through and arguing who had it worst. They were NYMA graduates of 42, 18 & 16 respectively.

(4,291 posts)I was very surprised to find no mention of this poser in the official list of Chickenhawks, maintained by the New Hampshire Gazette.
According to their Hall of Shame,...
Depending on external circumstances, such an individual may become one of three varieties of chickenhawk:
If there is no draft, and the nation is at peace, the individual becomes a Common Chickenhawk;
If there is a draft, and the nation is at peace, the individual becomes a Chickenhawk First Class;
If the there is a draft, and the nation is at war, the individual becomes a Chickenhawk First Class with Distinguished Fleeing Cross.
I have since corrected that oversight and nominated tRump. Rather than use a photoshopped image or caricature, I think this one is suitable.
You're welcome!

(14,573 posts)something Trump said during an interview. I believe this interview was with Chuck Todd. Chuck asked which generals he'd go to for military advice, and the Donald kind of did a 'deer in the lights.'
Recovering quickly (he is, after all, the master of the 'art of the deal'), he replied, "Well, I watch all the shows. I watch your show. Some of these shows have really good guests..."
I guess we might say he's a little weak on foreign policy and national defense.

My brother was in the army and is currently a police officer. He is also a conservative republican much to my mother's shame. I wonder what he thinks of Trump's statement. I'm afraid to ask who he is supporting. Thanksgiving should be interesting this year.
