Then they got more data. They learned things. And the new information changed their minds. That's kinda how science works.

In fact, in the early 1920s, scientists thought the Milky Way Galaxy made up the entire universe. It wasn't until 1925 that Edwin Hubble published a scientific paper proving that the Andromeda nebula was another galaxy far outside the Milky Way. So does that mean Donald Trump doesn't believe in other galaxies?
