(Of course, it didn't help that I initially left off the word "by" in the first part of my heading.)

I think he's being diplomatic and allowing us to read between the lines. It's like negative space. By drawing a vase, he's also showing us two faces. For example, by emphasizing the fact that Bernie's a truth teller, he's drawing attention to those who are not as forthright and candid.
