(17,493 posts)you were learning when there is no other choice.
The instructor said "Look into your attacker's eyes as the eyes are the window of the soul. If you feel he intends to seriously injure or kill you, you have little or nothing to lose by resisting him."
Fortunately I have never had to use any of the skills I learned in the that class and I hope and pray I never will. It is also true that never having been in such as situation, I might end up on my knees praying to my attacker to not kill me.
However I do remember some of the skills I learned and feel that I might have some chance of disarming my attacker even if I ended up seriously injured. Of course now I am much older now and my physical conditioning is not what it was thirty years ago. I realize my limitations.
You often react as you have been trained. If you don't have some training, obviously your chances are considerably less as you will be trying to think of what you can do and may simply freeze under the stress. It is totally unfair to blame the people in the Oregon classroom of not trying to overwhelm the shooter. However it is true that they might have been able to swarm him and render him harmless if they would have been prepared. Some experts do suggest throwing items such as books and chairs at the attacker as you rush him.
There was recently an incident on a train in France where a terrorist was overwhelmed by three very brave Americans. Had they not been willing to put their lives on the line, many more people may have been murdered. I have great admiration for the courage these young men displayed.

(17,505 posts)Do you believe he actually believes what he just spewed out of his cake hole?
I know they're SUPPOSED to say these kinds of things.... the NRA insists they do.
But in the real world, does anyone actually think this is some kind of way to deal with the problem or a solution?
It's just rhetoric.... clumsy bad rhetoric... that none of them would remember if they were in such a situation.
Too many movies.... too much TV. During the commercial break, the dead don't get up and find another show to work on. There is no commercial break.
As Laurie Anderson says in her song "Same Time Tomorrow"... (where she likes existence to a VCR)
Can we star all over again?

(2,212 posts)... and his reminiscing about throwing rocks at cars growing up, I'm convinced Ben Carson has a screw loose upstairs. Seriously: There is something not right with this man's mind. Total lack of empathy mixed with a peculiar immaturity of thought. Very odd.

(62,411 posts)ETA - Ben, the Donald and to some extent seem to get their fantasies from comic books and *ACTION* movies and TV shows.
Much like John Wayne and The Gipper, Saint Ronald of Reagan both of whom came to believe they fought (and probably won) WWII they both spent it on the back lots of movies sets. I get the feeling that Republican get their world view not from Fox news but from comic books and TV shows where problems are solved in one issue or on segment and bad guys are dispensed with like so many misbehaving grade schoolers.

the GOP is completely in the pocket of the NRA, which does not give a rat's ass about any constitution, just the profits of the arms makers and dealers.

Somethings the world is not so black and white as either "you are for or against us."
Man, sometimes my countrymen just don't make any sense. Critical thinking and independent thought is almost dead as is science.

As far as that WaPo article, "Zero correlation between state homicide rate & state gun laws",
it's a blog (opinion piece) by a pro-gun guy named Eugene Volokh.
According to Wikipedia:
"Volokh supported former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson in the 2008 presidential election, saying Thompson had good instincts on legal issues, and that he preferred Thompson's positions on the First Amendment and political speech to McCain's sponsorship of campaign finance reform.
Volokh also liked Thompson's position in favor of individual gun ownership."

(95,337 posts)We barely have the funds to operate our schools and provide funds along with properly paying our teachers. Now this idiot wants to provide all our teachers with a weapon and training so they can defend the school in the off chance there is a school shooting even though it has been shown that none of these mass-shootings have been stopped by random people caring their guns.

(24,695 posts)This is his quote;
"Dead bodies are no big deal, victims are to blame, let's arm the teachers"
Do you understand there Mr. Carson, how much this is going to cost the families financially, for the rest of there lives.
have you sat down and contemplated this little fact:
One, if married the other spouse will be forced to pay for the costs of the casket
Two -------------lets say this individual that is now dead, was making 50,000 a year and would have lived for over 70 years---------- $50,000 x 70 years = 3.5 million in lost income to the family
Three, just think there idiot, what do you think the family member now gets in Social Security benefits------------they get $250 dollars for funeral expenses.
Four, if they have a child, the child only gets social security death benefits until there eighteen
And just a reminder to your ilk ----------------------------the pain and suffering that these family members will have to endure for the rest of there lives.
So arming a teacher, to do what you think in your tin foil head should be like John Wayne reality of a movie, just shows how incompetent you really are, right along with your clown car buddies and there remarks

"I would not just stand there and let him shoot me. I would say: 'Hey, guys, everybody attack him! He may shoot me, but he can't get us all'."
In reality, it would go more like: "Hey, guys, everybody attack....Uh, I've been hit!"
How can someone this stupid get through medical school?
Q- What do you call a doctor who finished 399th out of 400 in medical school?

(5,644 posts)If the teacher locked up the gun in her desk, she'll have to have a kid to unlock the desk to get the gun out or just hope s/he can unlock it herself in time before he kills everyone in the class. What an azzhole that Carson is.
